New Zealand: Sustainable Ecosystems (PLSC/ENSP)

New Zealand, being geographically isolated, has its own sustainability issues from energy production to invasive species. You will travel throughout New Zealand's diverse ecosystems and learn about how the government approaches several aspects of sustainability, including but not limited to energy production, ecological conservation programs, tourism, and low-impact urban design including stormwater management and architecture. Additionally, you will interact with Maori peoples to understand how their culture and language has been revived in the recent past and what issues they face both economically and socially.

Vietnam: Climate-Resilient Development: Vietnam's Mekong Delta Region (AREC/ENES)

Over recent decades, Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region has emerged as one of the world’s most productive agricultural areas, resulting in high levels of trade and major progress in poverty reduction. Yet, the region remains highly vulnerable to climate change. You will see what this means on the ground and learn about what people are doing to anticipate and respond to these changes. The course highlights key principles of climate-resilient development, agriculture, natural resource management, and urban planning, illustrating their application and limitations through case studies and field visits in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

Bridget Harris, the AGNR education abroad peer mentor, standing in front of beautiful architecture during her study abroad experience

My name is Bridget Harris and I'm currently a senior environmental science & technology major with a concentration in natural resource management. During the Spring 2025 semester, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark with the Maryland-in-Copenhagen program. This experience deepened my understanding of global sustainability and natural resource management while allowing me to immerse myself in Denmark's innovative environmental practices.
